Six Reasons to Join This Trip

  • BACKED BY A REPUTABLE COMPANY

Avienne is part of Leatherback Travel, with 489+ trips run and 4,400+ travellers since 2019. We have an office in the Balkans and partners in every country where we run birdwatching trips.

  • FROM THE HIGHEST MOUNTAINS OF THE BALKANS TO THE LAGOONS OF NORTHERN GREECE

Thirteen days take you from the subalpine meadows of the Rila Mountains, at about 2,000 m, across the Rhodopes and down to the coastal lagoons and lakes of Northern Greece, with around 200 species along the way. Every stretch has its own habitat and its own local story, from a Rhodope bagpipe evening in Shiroka Laka to a talk on the vultures' comeback at Madzharovo.

  • SMALL GROUPS OF WOMEN

Our groups are up to 12 women. One lead guide takes up to eight guests, and a second qualified guide or host joins from nine, so no one is left straining to hear.

  • NEW TO BIRDING? YOU ALREADY BELONG HERE

Guests range from first-time birders to experienced ones. Nobody is expected to arrive knowing the birds, and questions are always welcome.

  • SLOW BIRDING, TIME FOR EVERY BIRD

We give each bird time, so everyone gets a proper chance to look through the scope. Where space is tight, such as narrow trails and hides, groups of nine or more split in two, each with its own leader, so the view is never crowded.

  • EVERYTHING ARRANGED, SCOPE ON HAND

Everything from the hotels to the daily transport is arranged before you land, and your guide carries a spotting scope for the group to share.

Itinerary

Day 1

Sofia to Yundola

Sofia to Yundola

The trip begins at 2 pm, so please arrive in Sofia before then. From there we transfer southeast to the eastern part of the Rila Mountains. If you plan on arriving the day before, see the airport question in the FAQs below.

If time allows, we make a quick stop at Besapari Hills, a limestone hilly and mostly treeless area at the foot of the Western Rhodope Mountains, with typical continental steppe vegetation. Here we can also see the European Souslik.

Overnight in the Yundola area, a mountain pass between the Western Rhodope Mountains and Rila Mountains.

Target birds

Long-legged Buzzard, Montagu's Harrier, Eurasian Stone Curlew, European Bee-eater, Eurasian Hoopoe, Calandra Lark, Greater Short-toed Lark, Tawny Pipit, Isabelline Wheatear, Black-headed Bunting

Dinner

Overnight: Hotel Andela (or similar)

Day 2

Rila National Park

Rila National Park

We spend the morning in the coniferous forests and mountain meadows of the eastern Rila Mountains, between Belmeken Reservoir and Yundola Pass, reaching about 2,000 m. Part of this area belongs to Rila National Park, established to preserve the unique biodiversity of the highest mountain range on the Balkan peninsula.

The afternoon is for the pristine coniferous forests at the core of the Western Rhodopes, where we search for the Eurasian Three-toed Woodpecker and the White-backed Woodpecker.

In the late afternoon we transfer for about an hour and a half to the Trigrad area, where we stay for two nights.

Target birds

Eurasian Pygmy Owl, Hazel Grouse, Black Woodpecker, Grey-headed Woodpecker, Spotted Nutcracker, Ring Ouzel, Water Pipit, Whinchat, Crested Tit, Willow Tit, Firecrest, European Serin, Eurasian Three-toed Woodpecker, White-backed Woodpecker, Semi-collared Flycatcher, Common Crossbill

BreakfastDinner

Overnight: Hotel Trigrad, Triibria guest house or Arkan Han (or similar)

Day 3

Trigrad Gorge and the Devil's Throat Cave

Trigrad Gorge and the Devil's Throat Cave

Trigrad Gorge comes first: a canyon of vertical marble walls enclosing the Trigrad River, which plunges into the Devil's Throat Cave and emerges half a kilometre further on as a large karst spring. The gorge is the realm of the Wallcreeper, one of the most sought-after birds in Europe.

We then explore the conifer forests and meadows around the gorge, with very good chances of seeing the Balkan Chamois.

In the late afternoon we head to Shiroka Laka, an architectural reserve village of white-walled Rhodope houses and home to the National School of Folklore Arts. It is a casual 45-minute drive from Trigrad. We enjoy a gaida (Rhodope bagpipe) demonstration with a delicious local dinner.

Target birds

Wallcreeper, Alpine Swift, Pallid Swift, Crag Martin, Black Stork, Peregrine Falcon, Common Cuckoo, White-throated Dipper, Lesser Whitethroat, Black Redstart, Rock Bunting, European Honey Buzzard, Corncrake, Marsh Tit, Sombre Tit, Ortolan Bunting, Barred Warbler

Day 4

Eastern Rhodopes and Madzharovo

Eastern Rhodopes and Madzharovo

We start with a four-hour transfer east to Madzharovo, broken up with several birding stops along the way. The Eastern Rhodopes are much lower, hotter and drier than the mountains we have left behind, and the wildlife changes significantly.

In the afternoon we visit the Vulture Conservation Visitor Centre in Madzharovo. A representative of the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds, the country's leading bird conservation organisation, tells the story of the vultures' successful comeback to Bulgarian skies.

Dinner is a local meal prepared by our hosts at the guest house.

Target birds

White Stork, Short-toed Eagle, European Turtle Dove, Eurasian Golden Oriole, Eurasian Crag Martin, Red-rumped Swallow, Common Nightingale, Woodchat and Red-backed Shrikes, Wood Lark, Eastern Olivaceous Warbler, Spanish Sparrow, Cirl Bunting

BreakfastLunchDinner

Overnight: Komplex Madzharovo or The Old Nest guest house (or similar)

Day 5

Madzharovo area exploration

Madzharovo area exploration

There is no transfer today. We spend the whole day in the Madzharovo area, which is extremely rich in birdlife, with Egyptian Vultures and Golden Eagles riding the thermals above rocky scrub and river bends. Staying in one place suits the pace of the trip: time to stay with a bird and give everyone a proper look.

Target birds

Sakar Hills and Mezek

Today we visit the Sakar Hills and the Maritsa River Valley. Our first stop is the area around Levka village, where our main target is the Eastern Imperial Eagle and the breeding colony of Lesser Kestrels, reintroduced here by another Bulgarian conservation society, Green Balkans. We may meet them and hear about the effort to reintroduce several bird species in Bulgaria over the last two decades.

In the early afternoon we visit the Mezek Thracian beehive tomb, from the 4th century BC, and the medieval fortress above Mezek village, both within the Sakar Hills. We then stop for a wine tasting around Mezek, before a local dinner prepared by our hosts in Madzharovo.

Here we can see Dalmatian Pelicans and Greater Flamingos, and offshore we can expect the Yelkouan Shearwater and Audouin's Gull.

In the early afternoon we visit Ancient Maroneia, right on our doorstep: the Hellenistic theatre, the sanctuary of Dionysus and the city walls running down to the sea, with the Cave of the Cyclops on the shore below.

Lagoon birding is at its best at dawn and dusk, so the visit to Ancient Maroneia fits into the midday heat with no additional driving.

Nestled between two mountain ranges, Lake Kerkini is one of the true jewels of European birding and the core of a nature reserve that is a relatively unexplored wonderland of beauty and biological diversity. Riverside forests and panoramic views from the Belasitsa and Krousia mountains give it a characteristic atmosphere.

We spend the whole day at the lake, including a boat trip that takes us close to the breeding colonies of Dalmatian and Great White Pelicans and other waterbirds. A virtually traffic-free track around the lake makes it ideal for birding and bird photography.

Trip FAQs

No. Avienne trips are built for curious beginners and lifelong birders alike. Our guides call out what to look and listen for as we go, so you never need to already know a Wallcreeper from a Whinchat.
Yes, please bring your own pair. Your guide also carries a spotting scope for the group to share, and we are happy to suggest what to look for if you are buying.
Not at all. Most of our travellers arrive solo and leave with a flock. Shared twin rooms are the standard rate, paired with another solo traveller, and a private room is available for a supplement if you'd rather have your own space.
Avienne is a women-only community built around the shared birdwatching experience, so we're not able to accommodate a companion of any kind who isn't joining the trip as a registered guest.
This is more demanding than a typical Avienne trip. Day 9 runs 13 to 14 hours door to door, Day 3 includes roughly 300 steep, wet steps out of the Devil's Throat Cave with no other way out, and several days mean long stretches on your feet in heat, cold, or exposed terrain at elevated altitude. The trip reaches about 2,000 m in the Rila Mountains on Day 2. If you have knee, hip, or claustrophobia concerns, get in touch before booking so we can talk it through. Unfortunately, this trip cannot accommodate people requiring walking aids.
Mornings start early, often before sunrise, when birds are most active and the light is kindest. Afternoons slow down, with time for lunch, culture stops, and rest before an evening session.
Both. We start in the mountains and valleys of Bulgaria, spend four nights in the coastal wetlands and lakes of Northern Greece, then return to Bulgaria for the last two nights near Sofia.
Both countries are full members of the Schengen Area, so the land crossings between them involve no border checks. Most passport holders, including the UK, EU, US, Canada, and Australia, need no visa for stays under 90 days. If your passport does require a Schengen visa, one covers both countries. Always worth checking your own country's current requirements before booking.
Sofia Airport (SOF), both arriving and departing. Transfers to and from the airport are included. The trip begins at 2 pm, so please book a flight that lands comfortably before then. If you plan on arriving the day before, we can arrange an additional hotel night for you.
Just the one: the euro, across both Bulgaria and Greece.
This trip starts 15 May, so expect a shift in climate as the days go on. In Bulgaria's mountains, days sit around 17 to 20°C (63 to 68°F), with mornings closer to 6 to 8°C (43 to 46°F) and cooler still at higher elevations like Rila, so pack warm layers for dawn starts. Rain showers are common in the mountains this time of year. By the time we reach Greece's coast, it's warmer and sunnier, with days around 22°C (72°F) and comfortable evenings.
Up to 12 women per journey. Groups of up to 8 travel with one lead bird guide; groups of 9 to 12 have a second qualified guide or host.
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Given what Avienne is about, we would naturally like our guides to be women. In some of the countries we visit, though, the pool of experienced birding guides is tiny for either gender, and occasionally no woman is available to lead a trip. That matters to us, and we are currently discussing what incentives and programs could encourage more women to become guides.
A deposit secures your spot, with the remaining balance due at least 120 days before departure. You can pay by major credit card or bank transfer. Full detail is in our Terms and Conditions.
Yes. A private room is available for a supplement, shown on this trip's pricing.
No, international flights aren't included, only transport and transfers once you're in Sofia.
Most of our trips have a tip kitty because many cultures have interesting and diverse rules when it comes to tips. We've found it to be the easiest way to combat over-tipping, under-tipping or having the tip fall into the wrong hands. Our goal is for guests to relax and know that the complexities of tipping are taken care of, on their behalf. We'll be updating this section with the tipping amount and how it's distributed, soon.
